Comfort Zones

As we approach the minor prophets, we’ll find that (as a friend put it), we are not called to comfort, we are called to conform. In other words, ease of life isn’t the Christian’s goal; instead, walking in imago dei is.

I hope this story retold by John Piper about famous minister Charles Wesley will motivate you to consider that calling. As you read it, do two things: consider the timing–Wesley was a “spring chicken” of Christendom, and bring the story to modern culture. Would you spend the night on death row?

Enjoy Charles Wesley’s Radical, Fruitful Risk.

A Powerful Prayer

This prayer is from St. Patrick from the 5th Century A.D. And yes, this is the same St. Patrick for which St. Patrick’s day is named. Kind of makes our current trend in celebrating the day seem a bit…well…um…er…heathen-ish?

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.

I arise today
Through the strength of Christ’s birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

I arise today
Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In the prayers of patriarchs,
In preachings of the apostles,
In faiths of confessors,
In innocence of virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God’s strength to pilot me;
God’s might to uphold me,
God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me,
God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me,
God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me,
God’s shield to protect me,
God’s hosts to save me
From snares of the devil,
From temptations of vices,
From every one who desires me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a multitude.

I summon today all these powers between me and evil,
Against every cruel merciless power that opposes my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom,
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of women and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man’s body and soul.

Christ shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that reward may come to me in abundance.
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through a confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.

Week 21 Files: Proverbs

Early to bed, early to rise makes a man wealthy, healthy and wise. Right? Sure…

This week we discussed proverbs in depth, and played a little Proverb fill-in-the blank. I hope you enjoyed and learned a bit as we had fun with them. This week’s handout and PowerPoint file about studying Proverbs is in a zip file. Several of you mentioned that you’ve had trouble opening these.

If you’re using Windows XP or Vista, you have a built-in zip file opener. If not, you’ll need to download something like WinZip or 7Zip to do the trick.

To open the zip files, after you’ve got one of those programs or operating systems–simply right click on the link, select “save target as” and once the file is downloaded, click open. This will open a folder that will show you all of the files inside. A zip file is basically a compressed package that holds several files within it…that way, you only have to download one file instead of two or three, and I only have to upload one. See? Win-win! :-)

You then should be able to see the files. This week’s package includes a PDF Handout (requires Acrobat Reader) and a PowerPoint Viewer (either from Microsoft or a third-party). If you have any questions, please send me an email or leave them in the comments.

Week 20 Files: Solomon, an Awareness Test, and the Temple

I hope you enjoyed our discussion about the temple, famous last words, and what it means to be a man. Our lesson PowerPoint led us through some of that conversation.

Here’s the awareness test video and the temple fly-through.

Ministry Technology

Works in progress…

Most of you know that I work as an IT consultant in addition to my ministry work. Yes, I know this qualifies me as the dorkiest man in existence…but I’ve come to grips with that fact, and so should you. :)

I’ve added a section at the top of the site "Church Technology." I’m working on putting together some of the more useful tips, tricks, and websites that I’ve come across that have something to do with ministry.

I get asked on a pretty regular basis for software recommendations to keep home PCs safe. I’ve put together a list of a semi-comprehensive package of tools you can use to protect your computer on a subpage of my Church Technology Section. I hope you’ll check it out! :)

This Week’s D’oh Moments

Enjoy two cat products and one dumb China-Olympics protester.

I’d like to see more specifically what happens when you open the door at the end…

As if the CatWash 9000 weren’t good enough, now there’s a new place you can make sure your friendly feline is getting enough Vitamin D. Yes, your very own Cat Tanning Bed!

One more, thanks to Digg…a protester against the Chinese hosting the Olympics who evidently isn’t very familiar with history…

In case you are wondering, the question isn’t "would we" but instead, "did we." The answer is "yes."
