The Last Weeks

It was a long journey, but we stuck with it! I wasn’t sure if this was going to happen, to be honest. We began 2008 with about a dozen people, and I thought that probably only 8-10 of us would be meeting together on this last Wednesday night of the year. You blew me away! Our last class session had nearly 35 people in it! If my records are right, about 18 of you completed your reading, and it was the first time for about ten of you! Congratulations!

We’re moving on from this class to begin a new one on January 14th. In it we’ll overview the Gospel of John for 20 weeks. I hope that you’ll join us.

Here are our last few weeks of materials. It is my hope and prayer that they will be beneficial to you as you continue your study of God’s word.

We didn’t get to meet as a class this week because of the presentation from Arnold about the work in Haiti, but I’ve prepared materials anyway, and I hope you can benefit from them.

Week 42: The end of an era

This is our final week of Old Testament studies. I hope you’ve found this to be as encouraging and enlightening as I have! We crack open the door to information about the intertestamental period this week, and look at the last words of the prophets.

(Aside: Does anyone else get really annoyed that Microsoft Word’s built-in spelling dictionary doesn’t have the books of the Bible? Would that be so hard???)

This week’s material covered Esther and Malachi. Esther is (in)famous for it’s avoidance of the Divine name and references to luck (lots). It’s no surprise that aporcyphal writings include a little extra material to “sanitize” the book!

Malachi is one of the great questioners of all time–and his retelling of God’s questions for man and man’s questions for God serves as an excellent spiritual check-up list for any of us.

Admittedly, this is not my favorite portion of scripture. To compensate for my lack of knowledge in the nuances of different interpretations of Daniel’s (crazy) visions, this week’s lesson PowerPoint is a compilation of links to sites — some of which I agree with, some of which I don’t, that offer explanations and clarifications of these prophecies. I hope that you’ll continue to study–and if you come up with a coherent interpretation of these passages–will you share them with me in the comments?

This week’s discussion revolved around the many questions from the book of Job. For one, why in the world is it not pronounced like it looks like it should be? :-)

We considered the problem of pain and suffering. God points out Job to Satan. Were it not for His actions, we could assume that Job’s life would have missed the suffering he experienced, and so on.

I used to hate timeline people.

I have become what I despise.

I can’t get my head around the divided kingdom’s kings and prophets without a little bit of visual help. We worked through some stories about Elijah and Elisha this past week and looked at a compilation of old testament timelines of the divided kingdom and timelines of old testament prophecy.

For my convenience, (not yours!), I’ve wrapped all the timelines and the presentation into a zip file. Enjoy!

Early to bed, early to rise makes a man wealthy, healthy and wise. Right? Sure…

This week we discussed proverbs in depth, and played a little Proverb fill-in-the blank. I hope you enjoyed and learned a bit as we had fun with them. This week’s handout and PowerPoint file about studying Proverbs is in a zip file. Several of you mentioned that you’ve had trouble opening these.

If you’re using Windows XP or Vista, you have a built-in zip file opener. If not, you’ll need to download something like WinZip or 7Zip to do the trick.

To open the zip files, after you’ve got one of those programs or operating systems–simply right click on the link, select “save target as” and once the file is downloaded, click open. This will open a folder that will show you all of the files inside. A zip file is basically a compressed package that holds several files within it…that way, you only have to download one file instead of two or three, and I only have to upload one. See? Win-win! :-)

You then should be able to see the files. This week’s package includes a PDF Handout (requires Acrobat Reader) and a PowerPoint Viewer (either from Microsoft or a third-party). If you have any questions, please send me an email or leave them in the comments.

Sorry for the posting delay lately. I’ve been a bit under the weather and traveled to Freed Hardeman for lectureship and Huntingdon for a memorial for Madelyn Beamon. Check out the podcasts available of FHU’s lectures from John: The Gospel of Belief. You can hear some really good sessions.

Here are our resources from Week 3. We had snow, so our small groups were extra-small. :-) We split into three groups. Each group answered all of the questions from the PDF. We gathered back together to go over our thoughts from the application questions. The PowerPoint this week didn’t have any notes attatched, so I’m not preparing a handout of it.

By the way, all scriptures are generally taken from the English Standard Version. It’s my translation of choice these days, and the folks at Good News Publishers are gracious enough to allow pretty generous access to their text.

Group Questions: Week 3

Until I get all the resources from our snowy and small (but wonderful) Wednesday night class up here, here are some of the discussion questions we looked at. Hope it’s good food for thought! :)

Group 1:
Read Matthew 26:38-46. What does the servant’s prayer have in common with Jesus’?
The servant got several physical signs. Other OT characters (Gideon, Abraham, Moses, Elijah) got them, too. Without signs like those, how does God help us make decisions? (see Luke 11:27-36)
Read Proverbs 3:5-6. How can we ensure spiritual success on our missions for him?
What else can we learn from this story?
Group 2:
Read Genesis 50:15-21. How does this story compare with Esau’s plan? (If you’ve read ahead…how does Esau’s plan turn out?)
Read Romans 9:12-14. Was this blessing situation fair?
Read Hebrews 12:15-17. What does unholiness or sexual immorality have to do with Esau?
What can we learn from these passages?
Group 3:
Read Exodus 20:17 and Proverbs 12:12. If everyone you just read about followed these passages, what would have been different?
Read 1Timothy 6:10 and Hebrews 13:4-6. What do we lose if we give in to materialism?
Read 1 Peter 2:23. What can we learn about solving problems from these examples?
